Jack Gouinlock was shot down over Liège, Belgium, and for several weeks was hidden by a sympathetic Belgian family in a small town. But when two German soldiers disappeared (presumably at the hands of the Comet Line aka Belgian resistance), there was a reprisal from the Germans. They rounded up 40 men from the town - including Jack - and marched them out of town to a farm. They were held over night, then in the morning were ordered to dig their own graves.
